Finders Weepers
If you look at the advertisements or at the book store you will notice that weight loss diets are a major force. Americans lose millions of pounds each and every year. Diet books, diet plans and diet foods are an obsession in our culture.

If you read the statistics, obesity is at near epidemic proportions in the United States. We are fatter than we have ever been and are getting fatter earlier in our lives and staying fat longer. This is in spite of the diets and the healthier foods on the menus of even the fast food restaurants. Or is it?

The physicists explain this seeming contradiction with one of the basic rules of physics. The rule states that simply that matter can neither be created nor destroyed. The rule has been expanded to state the matter can be converted to energy or energy to matter.

Based on this simple rule of physics, for every pound that someone sheds on a diet, someone else must pick up that weight. That would explain why with all of these weight loss diets we are getting more obese. Those of us that are not on a diet are picking up the weight from all of those who are on a diet. As soon as you stop a diet you become one of the people who are now subject to the other peoples’ weight loss.

The obesity crisis seems to be accelerating. What would explain this? The expanded part of the rule explains this. Americans are consuming more and more energy drinks. All of that energy has to go somewhere. If it was giving the people who drink them energy they would not need to drink them every day. The beverage companies are in a high volume business so they would not want the drinks to energize the drinker.

Since energy cannot be created or destroyed but only changed into matter, what happens to the energy from all of the energy drinks after the hour or two that the person feels the energy? The energy is converted into fat. If the person is on a diet, that means that someone else is getting the fat created from the energy drinks.

Of course this is just an April Fools article. Fat does not travel from one person to another. Energy drinks do not cause fat in other people. What does cause the rash of diets, energy drinks and obesity and are they linked?

Obesity is caused by many factors. The nutrition in foods and the ability of the food to be processed by the body is not what it was a century ago. Many of the vitamins and minerals are added to the foods. Many of these are there for the labels but in a form that the body cannot process. The result is that our bodies tell us that we still need more of these nutrients so we eat more to try to get the nutrients.

Using artificial stimulants, energy drinks, for a long time makes the body immune to the supplements. The result is that the body stops creating its own stimulants and the body needs more just to get the same results. Most of the energy drinks are added calories and that does turn into fat, so the person may gain weight.

In addition to food that provides calories but little nutrition we watch the screen more and more, both television and the computer. We even take the computer screen with us on our smart phones. Cars are easier to steer and beak. The amount of exercise we get is decreasing.

It is one of the interesting paradoxes of the human body that the more energy we expend by using our muscles the more energy we feel. The more energy we feel the more we exercise. The more we exercise the less excess weight we put on and the less time we have eat and the less time to watch television.
